Installing XAMPP on Mac OSX

When installing XAMPP on a Mac, I like to make the following changes to make life easier:

  • Rather than actually putting files into the /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs folder which is part of the Application directory, I find it easier to instead create symbolic links to a location in my home folder with a command such as:
    • cd /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs
    • ln -s /Users/<me>/Sites/<doc-root-of-your-application>
  • Remember to change the password using the following
    • /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/xampp security
  • After changing the password, you also might want to change the following file to allow access to phpmyadmin via the new password
    • /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/phpmyadmin/config.inc.php
    • Change #$cfg[‘Servers’][$i][‘password’] = ”; to add in the password that you have just set
